Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading is a government policy aimed at encouraging Australians to take out private hospital cover earlier to ease demand on the public healthcare system. If you don’t have a level of hospital cover by 1 July after your 31st birthday, you’ll face a loading on your premium when you eventually get covered.

For every year you delay, your premium will increase by 2%. For instance, if you wait until you’re 40, you’ll pay 20% more than if you had taken out cover at 30.
