Age-Based Discount

What are aged-based discounts?

The government wants to encourage more young people to get private health insurance, so it’s allowing health funds to discount premiums for people aged 18-29.

I’m in this age group. Can I get an age-based discount from HCF?

This reform was an optional change for health funds. As a member-based fund we’re taking the time to understand how offering age-based discounts would affect all our members. This is something we’ll continue to work on.

In the meantime, to help make health cover more accessible for you we’re launching a new hospital and extras package that’s designed for younger people. This lower-cost package features the treatments and services you’re most likely to need, with more flexibility in how you use your extras.

I’m already on your Young Starter cover. How will the change affect me?

We’ll get in touch to explain your options by February 2019. This will be by email or letter, depending on your contact preferences. Log in to check your preferences

What other options do I have if I’m 18-29?

If your parent(s) are with HCF you can be covered on their policy if:

  1. You’re 22-24, single and a full time student. Your parents can register you as a Student Dependant. If they do this at the start of the academic year you can be covered at no extra cost to them until you turn 25, or you finish your studies (whichever comes first).
  2. You’re not a student, but are 22-24. Your parents may be able to get Extended Family Cover. It’s only available on certain levels of cover so get in touch to find out if you’re eligible.
  3. You're 18-21 and not married or in a de facto relationship. Once you turn 22 you can consider options 1 and 2.

If you don’t fit into any of these groups you’ll need your own cover. Calll 13 13 34, visit a branch or email us and we’ll help you find cover that's right for you.
