Many people don't know that Medicare doesn't cover you for ambulance costs. And ambulances can be expensive, especially if you live in a rural or remote area. HCF Ambulance Only insurance covers the cost of emergency ambulance services provided by State government services if you need to go to hospital or for on-the-spot treatment in Australia.
If you have ambulance only cover with HCF, you’ll be covered for unlimited air, land or sea emergency ambulance trips across Australia from the following service providers:
ACT Ambulance Service
Ambulance Service of NSW
Non-Emergency Patient Transportation NSW
Ambulance Victoria
Queensland Ambulance Service
South Australia Ambulance Service
St John Ambulance Service NT
St John Ambulance Service WA

HCF Ambulance Only cover also includes non-emergency ambulance services provided by State government providers. This is payable if your doctor requests ambulance transport to a hospital because your medical condition requires a level of medical monitoring and support in transit that only an ambulance service can provide (up to $5,000 per person per calendar year). It doesn’t cover ambulance transport from another hospital or medical facility, including in an emergency.
A 24-hour waiting period applies for emergency ambulance services and a 2 month waiting period for non-emergency ambulance transport.

Emergency ambulance services for residents aren’t covered by the State government unless you hold certain government concession cards.
If you have HCF hospital cover, you may be entitled to fully-covered state emergency ambulance transport under a levy arrangement. If you have standalone HCF extras cover, you may be covered for an emergency ambulance for transport. We recommend checking your policy for more information.

You don’t need separate private health insurance as residents are covered by the State ambulance service scheme Australia-wide.
Ambulance cover in Tas
If you're a resident of Tas, you're covered by your State ambulance service scheme for ambulance services within Tas. In other States and Territories, the scheme generally covers road ambulance services only. It doesn’t cover the cost of ambulance services in Qld and SA.
You may be able to claim for emergency ambulance services not covered by your State scheme under your HCF hospital or extras cover.

If you live in SA, Vic, NT or WA, your State or Territory government doesn’t cover the cost of ambulances. There are some exceptions for concession card holders, otherwise you’ll need either private health insurance, which includes ambulance cover, HCF Ambulance Only cover or an ambulance subscription.
