Answers to commonly asked questions to help you make the right choice.

On top of choosing your doctor and hospital, and lowering out-of-pocket costs on extras like dental, physio and chiro, singles health cover has additional benefits that could help you avoid lengthy public wait times for elective surgery, give you greater access to your own private room during hospital stays depending on availability, and could help you get more back when you lodge your tax return by helping you avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge if your income is above a certain threshold.

The cost of single private health insurance depends on a few things like your level of cover or the state or territory you live in, but can start as low $3.01 a week### for extras cover with HCF.

Other considerations are your age and income level for your private health insurance rebate, if you need to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge, and Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading if you haven’t taken out and maintained private hospital cover from the year you turn 31.

On top of a private health insurance rebate and not paying the Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading if you have hospital cover before turning 31, singles health cover could also help you avoid paying the Medicare Levy Surcharge if your income is above a certain threshold.

This additional tax can be between 1% and 1.5% of your individual income if it’s above the specified threshold of $97,000 and you don’t have the appropriate level of private hospital cover.
