FAQs
What is comprehensive motor insurance?
Comprehensive motor insurance covers your vehicle, plus damage you cause to other people’s vehicles or property. It doesn’t cover your liability to pay compensation if you cause injury to another person (subject to limited exceptions).
Is comprehensive motor insurance necessary?
Comprehensive motor insurance isn’t mandatory in Australia. However, if you bought your vehicle using finance, your financial institution (e.g. bank) might require you to have comprehensive insurance.
Otherwise, if you choose not to take out comprehensive motor insurance and you or the driver of your vehicle is at fault in an accident, you’ll be responsible for the cost of any damage to your own vehicle.
If you don’t have third party (also called Third Party Property Damage) insurance either, you’ll also be liable for damages caused to any third-party vehicle or property.
What does HCF Comprehensive Motor Insurance cover?
This insurance provides cover for accidental loss or damage to your vehicle, as well as your legal liability for the damage you cause to other people’s vehicles or property. Some examples of covered events include:
- motor accidents, like a collision with another vehicle
- theft
- fire damage
- storm damage
- hail damage
- damage while your vehicle’s parked.
For more information, see the Product Disclosure Statement.
Can I drive another vehicle with comprehensive insurance cover?
Your HCF Comprehensive Motor Insurance policy covers your car, which means it won’t cover you when you’re driving someone else's vehicle. You should always check their insurance policy details first, to confirm whether you’re covered driving their car.
Does comprehensive motor insurance include Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTP)?
No. When you purchase Comprehensive Motor Insurance, it doesn’t include CTP. Also known as a Green Slip in NSW, CTP insurance covers your liability and the liability of anyone else driving your vehicle for injuries caused to other road users in a motor accident.
CTP doesn't provide cover for any damage you cause to other people's vehicles or property. Note that you can’t register a vehicle in Australia without CTP insurance.
What is Third Party Property Damage Motor Insurance?
Third Party Property Damage (TPPD) Motor Insurance, also known as third party insurance or legal liability, covers damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property while using your vehicle. This includes the cost of the damage and reasonable approved legal costs arising from a covered accident.
It doesn’t cover accidental loss or damage caused to your own vehicle, including from fire or theft. Nor does it cover injury you cause to other people.
If you do want to cover your vehicle from loss or damage, you might consider our Comprehensive Motor Insurance.
For more information on TPPD Motor Insurance, see the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
Is there an excess to pay?
Unless your policy specifically says there is no excess for a particular event (such as the basic excess removal for windscreen cover option) – you may need to pay an excess.
Check your policy schedule to see what your applicable excesses are.
What’s the difference between HCF Third Party Property Damage (TPPD) Motor Insurance and Compulsory Third Party (CTP) cover?
CTP insurance (also called a Greenslip in NSW) covers you for injuries to other people – caused by the driver of your vehicle. TPPD motor insurance covers you for damage to other people’s vehicles and property – also caused by the driver of your vehicle. Neither CTP nor third party insurances cover you for damage to your own vehicle.
Note, you can’t register a vehicle in Australia without CTP insurance.
What’s the difference between third party and comprehensive motor insurance?
The main difference between third party property damage (also called TPPD or ‘third party’) motor insurance and comprehensive motor insurance is that, while both cover your legal liability if you destroy or damage someone else’s vehicle or property, third party insurance does not cover any loss or damage to your own vehicle (subject to limited exceptions).
So, if you want to cover your car against loss or damage from accidents, fire, theft and legal liability, you should consider comprehensive insurance.
